Our second Oral Health Tip For Busy People is to brush your teeth twice a day. Brushing your teeth is extremely important in maintaining great oral health.
Why you should brush your teeth twice a day:
You may already know that brushing your teeth is important to remove plaque, the cause of tooth decay and gum disease but did you know once a day won’t keep the bacteria away? Add brushing and flossing your teeth into your morning and bedtime routine further prevent bacteria building up and reduce your chances of gum disease.
How long should I brush my teeth for?
To get the maximum benefit of teeth brushing it is recommended that you brush for two minutes, spending roughly 30 seconds on each quarter of your mouth.
Electric toothbrushes make this 2 minute rule easy as they generally have a timer to guide you. If you don't have an electric toothbrush why not brush to your favourite 2 minute song on your streaming service.
How to brush your teeth?
The science behind brushing your teeth may seem like a no-brainer. You have been doing this for years. But research has suggested the following method to work best:
- Brush in a circular motion
- Gently brush, do not scrub
- Start at the back with the toothbrush at the baseline of the gum or at a 45 degree angle
- Do not rinse your mouth at the end - keeping your mouth coated helps fight bacteria throughout the day or into the night
