In the Chair with Dr Alan Miller

Celebrating his 40th year in the dental industry in 2018, get to know Maven Dental Subiaco's principal dentist - Dr Alan Miller. Alan jumped In the Chair this week to chat about how he stays on top of his game and how important it is to continue learning in the dental industry.

Tell us a little about your career in dentistry so far.

I started my first private practice in Donnybrook in the south west of Western Australia. This was a non-fluoridated area and was a bit like walking into the war zone. I ended up staying for 5 years and employing 2 other dentists to work with patients in practices in neighbouring towns. This enabled me to get great experiences in all facets of dentistry. I moved to Perth and joined a large practice but after 10 years decided to relocate to starting my practice known as Alan Miller Dental Practice now known as Maven Dental Subiaco and have been here for 25 years.

You’re coming up on 40 years in the dental industry, how important is it to keep developing as a dental professional, and keeping up with the latest trends in the industry?

I have an interest in cosmetic density and this practice has been amalgam free since I started. I was the first dentist in Western Australia to use the cerec technology to make ceramic inlays and crowns, so we have always tried to be up to date with the latest technological advances in dentistry. One of the advantages of having a long practice life is that I can see work done 20 years ago. I still get a buzz seeing cerec inlays that have been in place for 20 or more years and look as good as the day they were done. So obviously I am a big fan of cerec which for those that don’t know, it uses 3D imaging to mill ceramic inlays and crowns in one visit. It brings dentistry into the 21st century. I also use a lot of intraoral cameras, images to allow patients to see what I have seen in their mouth.

If you could only give one piece of advice to your patients, what would it be?

My advice to patients has always been prevention, have regular check-ups and scale and cleans so that things are not allowed to get out of control. If this is done then dental treatment is affordable for everyone.

What can we find Dr Miller doing when he isn’t at Maven Dental Subiaco?

When I’m not in the surgery I love the outdoors. I play tennis twice a week and go fishing as often as I can, and I like to keep fit in the gym. I think keeping fit is the key to the long period of concentration required in a busy practice. As you can see I have two dogs that also demand lots of exercises usually at the beach.
