Coming from a long-line of medical professionals, Dr Sherin Gad didn't think twice about pursuing a career in the dental industry. We caught up with the passionate dentist from Maven Dental Brunswick to talk dentistry, life motto's and her love of Melbourne.
Why did you decide to become a dentist?
I come from a family of surgeons, paediatricians and pharmacists and I always knew I wanted to be in the medical field. It wasn't until I had a conversation with our family dentist when I was in middle school, that I knew that dentistry was my dream. He was really nice and approachable, and he actually asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up, and when I said a doctor or a dentist. He warned me about dentistry and how physically demanding it can be. He piqued my curiosity, and I was intrigued by all the equipment at his surgery. I now know he was right! But it is also very rewarding, and the dental technology and industry has come a long way since. I enjoy treating patients in pain and improving their quality of life.
Originally from Egypt, how long have you been in Melbourne? And what do you love about Brunswick?
I’ve been in Melbourne for 11 years and I love it because of its diverse food, art culture and great music as well as its many events and attractions that make it one of the most liveable cities in the world! It’s also a great place to raise a family.
Brunswick in particular is well known for its unique cafes, restaurants and events all year round. We get a great mix of patients with different interests, backgrounds and ages ranging from students to couples to families with children and older patients.
You’re passionate about preventative dentistry. How do you help your patients prevent tooth decay/dental issues?
It all starts with building a positive attitude towards oral health and a positive relationship with oral health care professionals, attending regular check-ups and following a good daily oral hygiene protocol. I feel my role is to empower patients with knowledge and tools to do this, and also to notify them when intervention is needed and discuss all the possible treatment options.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
The best advice I’ve been given is that your life is about how you tell your story, how you perceive your struggles, challenges and achievements and what you learn from it.
My life motto is related to working towards an aim or a big goal, which can change at different points in your journey, but it’s always important to look at the bigger picture and have something to work towards.
Away from the practice, what do you love doing?
Outside of work you’ll often find me spending time with my husband and kids who always keep me on my toes! I also love going to the gym, doing yoga, shopping and travelling. I love learning about different languages and cultures.
