Here at Maven Dental Group we don't just have talented dental professionals. 'In the Chair' this week we caught up with our Workplace Health and Safety Officer, Glenn Horner, at our Maven Dental Support Centre in the heart of Surfers Paradise. Whilst his role is a challenging one, Glenn shares with us how he helps our Maven community both behind-the-scenes and on the front line.
How long have you been with Maven Dental Group, and what does your role here involve?
I started with Maven in January this year. Health and Safety is naturally quite diverse and touches most aspects of the business (first aid, incidents, compliance, infection control the list goes on). This means I am regularly in contact with our practice teams and have probably come into contact with most of the organisation at some point (and for those that haven't heard from me I'm sure I will be talking to you soon). I envisage bringing a non-traditional spin to WH&S. If anyone in our Maven practice teams has any questions at all please reach out.
You haven’t always been a WH&S officer, can you share with us your previous jobs and how they have supported you in your current role?
I have a diverse work history including working for larger organisations (the Telstra network and Apple). In these organisations I was both on the front lines and provided support to help the businesses grow in a legislative environment (privacy). The skills I gained with these organisations, including understanding legislation and working with regulatory bodies, have set me up for success in the WHS role at Maven.
Creating a safe working environment is important. Are there any challenges in achieving this on a national scale?
The biggest challenge as a group is to maintain and improve standards when those standards change from state to state. The non-uniformity of requirements, whilst a challenge, can be overcome by identifying the common ground and moving everyone towards a single goal.
What do you love about Maven Dental Group?
I like the vision of the group and want to be part of a business that has a clear purpose and direction.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
‘Never be a Mr 80%, always try and complete tasks’
- I cannot remember who gave me this advice but I do my best to stick by it.
Who was your role model growing up?
Kieran Perkins as I was a State Swimmer growing up.
When you aren’t at Maven Dental, how do you spend your free time?
I am passionate about technology especially anything from Apple. I am what people call an early adopter. My smart home includes door locks, lights, power and fans all controlled though my voice. Living the automated home dream!
