A mouthguard is an appliance that is made to fit your mouth and offers protection for your teeth, jaw joints, soft tissue and neck against injuries and may even help reduce concussion when playing sports like football, boxing and hockey or participating in high impact activities. They literally offer a protective barrier around the teeth to prevent injury to the individual as well as others. Mouthguards are recommended for active people, as sport is one of the most common causes of dental injury.
Do dentists make mouthguards?
Many, if not all dentists make mouthguards. A mouthguard is a great preventive measure to avoid serious dental injury, which is why dentists are so passionate about the use of a properly fitted mouthguard. Although mouthguards are available off the shelf in chemists and even supermarkets, having a custom fitted mouthguard is invaluable to a player as it can often be the difference between it working as it is supposed to and not working at all or falling out! A custom fitted mouthguard is also much more comfortable to wear. On appointment your dentist will take an impression of your teeth using a soft, gooey material. Then a replica model is made of your teeth. A soft plastic form is then applied to the model of your teeth and creates the mouthguard.
Why do I need a mouthguard?
Injury prevention is the number one reason to wear a mouthguard. If you play a sport or are involved in activities where your mouth or face could be in danger, it is smart and safe to wear a mouthguard. One little slip-up can cause serious damage which could affect you for the rest of your life. Many serious dental injuries are caused by tooth trauma and your teeth are an important asset. Wearing a properly fitted mouthguard when necessary will help you protect them.

Your dentist or dental hygienist will then show you how to care for your teeth at home, and will recommend the correct products for you to use.

In-chair teeth whitening
Can a dentist whiten my teeth?
Yes, there is a teeth whitening procedure that is performed in the dental chair. It is the fastest and most effective way to whiten teeth and usually takes around one hour to complete. In-practice whitening is the best option for those wanting ‘instant’ results.
What happens when I get my teeth whitened at the dentist?
Your clinician will first apply a protective gel to the gums, followed by the application of the whitening gel to the teeth. The gel (which contains Peroxide) is then left on the teeth or some systems require activation by a special LED light (one is not better than the other, just a different gel), and the resulting reaction gently penetrates the tooth to lift deep stains and discolourations. This process varies in length of time, depending on factors such as individual goals for whitening and what can be achieved in the appointment.
How long does teeth whitening last?
This will depend on many factors, including the lifestyle and habits. However, it can take a few years before the discolouration returns to the level it was before treatment. Some whitening systems also have touch-up kits available to top up the whitening at home, which helps to preserve the level of whitening for longer.
Take home teeth whitening
Can I whiten my teeth at home?
Maven Dental Group clinicians offer various brands of whitening systems in a take home formulation. Here's how it works.
Your first step is to make a teeth whitening appointment with one of our Maven Dental Group practices nationwide. At this appointment your dentist will discuss your options with you and either start the process or return you for another visit. To get started, an impression of your teeth will be taken so we can make your custom whitening trays. Within days, your complete whitening kit will be available for your collection. Your kit contains two new custom-made trays (one for your top teeth and one for your bottom teeth), syringes of whitening gel and easy-to-follow instructions.
Once you have collected your kit, you will be able to get started by following the instructions provided. Usually you will simply apply a small drop of gel inside each tooth impression in your two trays, place the trays on your teeth, then relax – read, watch TV, surf the internet – while the whitening gel does its job. After your whitening session, remove and rinse your trays, and complete your home care instructions. Repeat this over the next week or two, or as advised by your dentist until you achieve the level of whitening you desire.
The snug fit of your custom-made tray combined with professional grade, quality whitening gel that you can only get from a dentist, provides you with an amazing result that an off-the-shelf supermarket kit simply cannot offer.
