Teeth straightening - Non Specialist
A number of Maven Dental Group practices located throughout Australia offer teeth straightening treatments for adults and children of varied ages. A select number of our dentists are experienced in providing teeth straightening options and can treat patients with a range of problems, such as crowded or crooked teeth, natural gaps, missing adult teeth, protruding front teeth and painful, clicking jaws. Straightening your teeth is often for cosmetic reasons, to achieve a straight, uniform smile, however crooked teeth can often interfere with your bite, negatively affect your facial shape and create pockets that are hard to reach with a toothbrush, causing hard to avoid decay.
Can a dentist straighten my teeth?
Despite not being qualified orthodontists, dentists who have pursued additional training and qualifications in this field are able to administer clear aligners, such as Invisalign, and fit braces. Recent software has made applying braces much simpler, leaving the shaping of each bracket to the computer and then manufacture to the lab. Speak to your dentist to ascertain whether they are confident in teeth straightening, and if not they will be able to refer you to an orthodontist.
What can be used to straighten my teeth?
Metal braces/Traditional braces
These are the metal brackets and wires that most people picture when they hear the word "braces." However, modern brackets are smaller and less noticeable than the notorious "metal-mouth" braces than many adults remember.
Ceramic braces are the same size and shape as metal braces, except that they have tooth-coloured or clear brackets that blend in to teeth. Some even use tooth-coloured wires to be even less noticeable.
Lingual braces are the same as traditional metal braces, except that the brackets and wires are placed on the inside of teeth.
Invisalign consists of a series of custom-made, mouth guard-like clear plastic aligners. The aligners are removable and are replaced every 2 weeks.
This is a very basic description of current orthodontic processes, however, with the constantly updated technologies incorporating 3D imaging and specialised software to calculate and computerise the end result of the orthodontics, helping both patients and orthodontists choose the best and most effective treatments for each individual.
