Meet The Team

Dr Chau's parents, who were at the time residing in Hong Kong sent him to study at Nudgee College (Queensland).

On completing secondary education he enrolled in the Dental Faculty at Queensland University. In his final year, he received a bursary from the Tasmanian government. In return, he had to render dental services in Tasmania for 1 year.

After working for 3 years, Dr Chau and his wife, Irene, decided to make Tasmania home and he commenced private practice in 1969.

As well as running a successful dental practice he has also achieved many professional accolades.

Between 1974-1995 and he was heavily involved with the Australian Dental Association (ADA) of Tasmania as a dedicated committee member. From 1982-1984 Dr Chau was President of the Tasmanian Branch of the ADA. In 1980 and 1995 he was elected treasurer for both National Dental Congresses held in 1980 & 1995.

Dr Chau was elected a "Fellow of the International College of Dentists" on 21 July 2000. This honour was in recognition of his service to the Dental Profession.

Whilst Dr Chau has many patients that are coming from 3rd generation families, he also welcomes new patients. Dr Chau currently works 4 days a week in a most enthusiastic manner. He thoroughly enjoys the company of the team at the clinic and his patients.

The success achieved over the past 40 years could only happen with the support and dedication of the fantastic team at the clinic and his loyal patients.

Dr Chau strongly believes that "whatever you do in life, make sure you strive to be the best". This can truly be demonstrated by Dr Chau's success. In his spare time, Dr Chau enjoys gardening, fishing and golfing. Dr Chau is fluent in English and Cantonese.

Dr Huei Chen brings valuable experience and knowledge to her patients. Upon graduating from the University of Melbourne, Huei worked in Bendigo for a year where she enjoyed the country lifestyle before returning to Melbourne.

Relocating to Hobart has been an exciting 'next step' for Dr Chen and she looks forward to establishing meaningful relationships with her patients at Dr J. A. Chau Dental Surgeons clinic.

Dr Chen enjoys the variety of general dentistry and finding the best treatment options for her patients. With a calming but encouraging manner, she believes in a gentle approach to dental care. She is enthusiastic about helping children and adolescents develop excellent oral health habits, however, she enjoys sharing this passion with patients of all ages.

In her spare time, she can be found curled up with a good book, hiking or running and exploring her new home!

Lucy Nichols has operated her oral health therapy practice at the Dr J. A. Chau Dental Surgeons clinic since 2014. Lucy followed in the footsteps of her late grandfather, Dr Brian Gedye, completing a Bachelor of Oral Health Science at LaTrobe University. After receiving her qualifications, she returned home to Hobart to begin her career in hygiene and dental therapy.

Lucy is a passionate oral health therapist who enjoys working with patients of all ages. She particularly likes building strong relationships with her patients and establishing great rapport with the younger patients. Her kind and compassionate nature assists in her patients feeling comfortable and relaxed during their appointment.

in her spare time, Lucy enjoys spending quality time with her friends, family and pet rabbit, Parsley. She is also interested in interior design, fashion and photography.
