Back-to-Basics: 4 Simple Steps for a Lifetime of Healthy Smiles

Sometimes, the best dental advice is the simplest - and this Dental Health Week, we’re celebrating the basics that build brilliant smiles.

These four evidence-based steps, backed by the Australian Dental Association (ADA), are easy to follow and proven to protect your teeth and gums for life.

  1. Brush Twice Daily with Fluoride Toothpaste
Brushing your teeth morning and night with fluoride toothpaste helps remove plaque, protect your enamel, and reduce your risk of cavities. Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste and brush for two minutes with a soft-bristled brush. After brushing, spit out the toothpaste - don’t rinse your mouth with water. Leaving a little fluoride behind gives your teeth longer-lasting protection.

  2. Clean Between Your Teeth Daily
Toothbrushes can’t reach the tight spaces between your teeth, which is why daily cleaning with floss or interdental brushes is essential. This helps remove trapped food and plaque that can lead to decay and gum disease.

  3. Eat a Tooth-Friendly Diet Low in Added Sugar
A healthy smile starts in the kitchen. Limit added sugars and frequent snacking, and aim to eat plenty of crunchy vegetables, whole grains, cheese, nuts, and water.

  4. Visit Your Dentist Regularly
Preventive care is key. Even if your teeth feel fine, regular dental visits help catch small issues before they become bigger problems. Your dentist can check for decay, gum disease, and other concerns that aren’t always visible or painful.
