A Parent's Guide to Growing Healthy Smiles
From the first baby tooth to teenage independence, every child’s smile tells a story. And this Dental Health Week (August 4–10), we’re celebrating every chapter of that journey.
The Australian Dental Association’s 2025 theme—Reach Every S-Milestone - is all about helping parents and caregivers support healthy smiles through all stages of childhood and adolescence. Here’s how to nurture your child’s oral health from baby teeth to braces and beyond:
- Start - Infancy 0-2 years
Oral health begins before the first tooth even appears! Gently wipe your baby’s gums with a soft cloth and start brushing as soon as the first tooth erupts. Choose a baby-sized toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste.
- Smile - Early Childhood 2–5 years
This is when routines take root. Make dental care fun and consistent. Brush and floss together, use songs, stickers, or apps to make brushing fun. This is also a great time to talk positively about dental visits.
- See - School Age 6–12 years
The first dental visit should happen by age 1, or within six months of the first tooth coming through. By school age, dental check-ups should happen every 6 months, early visits help your child get comfortable at the dentist and allow us to spot issues early. Don’t forget to get them fitted for a custom mouthguard for sport.
- Strengthen – Teens age 13+
A tooth-friendly diet, consistent brushing and flossing all help strengthen your child’s smile for life. Continue regular check-ups—even during busy school or sport terms and discuss orthodontic options if needed.
