In the Chair with Dr Ahmed Wahba

This week's In the Chair we sat down with Maven Dental Punchbowl's adrenaline seeking Lead Dentist, Dr Ahmed Wahba. Dr Wahba gives us an insight into his passion's in the dental industry and the importance of creating a comforting environment for visitors as they walk in the Maven Dental Punchbowl doors.

You have been a dentist for just over a decade now, tell us a little about your journey so far.

I have been practising Dentistry since 2007 - what most attracted me to this profession is that it combines the art and science together to help people.

It became a passion and I have worked hard to improve my skills through attending many professional development courses and conferences. I also have joined some postgraduate academic programs to ensure I am giving my patients the best standard for each and every treatment I provide.

After passing the Australian Dental Council Exams, I then moved to Australia, joined the Australian Dental Association, and have been elected as a member by the Royal Australasian college of dental surgeons after passing its examination. I practice all aspects of general dentistry with special interests in oral surgery, dental implants, and endodontics.

So you’ve got a keen interest in Endodontics. For those of us who aren’t quite sure what that is, what does this area of treatment involve?

Endodontic therapy, also known as Root Canal Treatment, is a procedure used to fix the tooth when a deep cavity or fracture causes nerve damage.

The treatment involves cleaning and decontamination of the root canals that are naturally occupied by nerves, blood vessels, and other cells.

Filling of the cleaned and decontaminated canals is then done with an inert filling material called 'gutta percha'.

The endodontic procedure is very useful in eliminating pain and/or infection of an unhealthy or injured tooth. After root canal therapy, the tooth becomes weaker so a protective cover or cap is usually recommended after the procedure to prevent fracture and provide a good seal for the treated tooth.

And you are also interested in Dental Implant Surgery, what does that involve and why do you like this area of dentistry?

Dental implants are used to replace the missing teeth with an artificial one that looks and functions similar to the natural teeth. Recent technology rendered this procedure more precision and accuracy.

Dental implants procedure ideally should be performed in stages. Initially, some data will be obtained including three-dimensional x-ray's and accurate moulds of the teeth and soft tissues.

A surgery is then performed to place a screw-like post in the jaw bone in the ideal position using a surgical guide created from the 3D images and the digital planning performed prior to the surgery.

Usually, dental implants are made of Titanium which can be safely placed in our body, it has been used for over 50 years and has been studied extensively over this time. An alternative material called Zirconia (Ceramic Implants) has recently been developed and gained more attention along with holistic dentistry and are being researched.

Dental implants can now provide a welcome alternative to the conventional removable dentures and dental bridges that don’t fit well. And a very predictable approach for replacing missing teeth.

How important is it for patients to feel comfortable when they visit, and how does the team at Maven Dental Punchbowl achieve this?

At Maven dental Punchbowl we put our patient's emotions and physical needs as our first priority. As we know that going to the dentist could be very stressful for most of the people, we do our best to create a happy and stress-free environment. We try to exceed their expectations in every aspect from the moment they step in, up to the time they achieve what they came for.

We like to develop a long-term relationship with our patients through comprehensive care, education, and excellent customer service. We pride ourselves on being friendly and caring while exercising a high level of professionalism.

Outside of Maven Dental, what could we find Dr Wahba doing?

Relaxing somewhere swimming, riding my motorbike, or enjoying some quality time with my wife. I am lucky living not too far from Sydney’s beautiful beaches and rivers which have some perfect spots to chill and meditate. I also love doing some crazy stuff whenever possible like skydiving, bungee jumping, or trying some new adventures.
