Whitening your teeth is a simple cosmetic, non-invasive procedure that lightens the natural colour of your teeth, resulting in a whiter, brighter smile.
What Types of Teeth Whitening Are Available?
In-chair teeth whitening (explain a little about the process) In-chair products are applied by your dental health professional. These products are applied directly to your teeth and may be activated by heat, light, or laser. This process commonly only takes about an hour. If you don’t have tooth sensitivity, and are seeking an immediate outcome this may be your preferred choice.
Take home teeth whitening (explain a little about the process) Take home kits include professional grade treatment gel which is applied to custom made fitted trays designed for your teeth provided by your dental health professional.
The gel is applied into the trays and you wear them for between one to three hours a day, the process may take a few days to a few weeks for results. This can be reapplied at any time you want to refresh your brighter whiter smile.
Once you have your custom made trays, all you have to do is purchase the bleach refills to keep going.
What is the difference between In-chair and Take home whitening?
The only difference between in-chair and home whitening products provided by your dental health professional are the products used by your dental health professional contains a higher percentage of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, therefore giving you an immediate result.
How Safe is Teeth Whitening?
Try to avoid bleach contact with gums as much as possible, and avoid swallowing the bleach. Excessive bleaching attempts can damage enamel, as can overly acidic products. You may end up with more porous enamel or a bluish tinge.
You may experience extreme sensitivity, it is recommended that you stop using your bleach for a short period, and use a sensitivity toothpaste or mousse in your trays.
What is the process for Teeth Whitening?
Teeth whitening is a simple process. Whitening products contain one of two tooth bleaches (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide). These bleaches break stains into smaller pieces, which make the colour more translucent and your teeth brighter.
Tips for teeth whitening
Avoid staining your teeth with tea, coffee, red wine, soft drinks, smoking and types of food that can cause discolouration (eg curries, berries etc) for a couple of days after whitening. When drinking beverages, try using a straw to keep stain-causing dyes away from your teeth. Bleach won’t whiten crowns or fillings, and these may need to be replaced if they no longer match the rest of your teeth. Your teeth may need re-whitening after a couple of years or so. Have realistic expectations.
