Maintain oral hygiene routine at home
We recommend visiting a dentist from as young as 6 months old or as the first teeth appear. This will ensure that your child gets used to the experience and that you receive good preventative dental advice as early as possible
The journey to maintaining strong oral health starts right from childhood, providing a solid foundation for the future.
This is especially significant as baby teeth play a pivotal role in shaping the jaw, aiding in speech development, and ensuring correct positioning for adult teeth. When baby teeth fall out prematurely, it can hinder the natural alignment and development of the adult teeth that follow.
Preventive dental care is extremely important in children. Visiting a dentist as early as 6 months of age can be beneficial to your child’s future oral health and allow for early detection of problems. This commences a positive relationship with your child’s dentist.
At your local Maven Dental clinic, your dentist will make sure that your child’s first visit to the dentist is enjoyable and helping them to;
The cost of seeing a dentist will depend on the treatment necessary for your child. Your Maven dentist will recommend any treatment option best suited to your child if necessary and give you an estimate of the price and payment options during your visit. If your children meet the eligibility criteria for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, you will be able to utilise this benefit in participating practices.
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a government initiative providing financial support for basic dental services for children.
Eligible children can receive up to a specified benefit cap over two consecutive calendar years. Your child may be eligible for up to $1,095 in basic dental services!
For full details and help figuring out if your child is eligible, visit our full page on the Child Dental Benefit Schedule.
Children’s dentists are trained in working with children and taking care of their oral health during the teeth growing process. It is beneficial to visit a dentist to help detect and prevent issues from occurring at a young age.
Your kid’s oral health care should begin even before their first tooth appears.
Once your baby is about 3 months old, you should gently wipe their gums using a soft damp cloth twice a day. This does a few things; for one, it can prevent nasty bacteria from building up. It also helps get your kid ready for brushing after their first tooth does finally pop through.
Celebrate this milestone! Begin by gently brushing the tooth with water and a soft-bristled toothbrush designed for babies.
It is important to start a routine of brushing your child’s baby teeth twice a day – in the morning and at night before bed (just like you!).
It's also a good time to schedule their first dental visit at your local dentist.
We recommend as early as 6 months, or when the first teeth come through. It is important to create healthy habits from an early age. This allows for your children to create a positive association with the dentist and build an ongoing relationship with the team at our Maven Dental practices.
If your child is involved in sports, especially contact sports, consider getting them a custom-made mouthguard.
Accidents happen, especially in contact sports, so it’s best to protect their mouth and teeth in the best way we can.
These mouthguards can significantly reduce the risk of dental injuries, and are also a lot cheaper than the cost to fix damage caused in accidents!
The best time varies depending on your kid’s individual needs. Generally, by age 7, children should have an orthodontic evaluation.
This allows for early identification of potential issues and timely intervention.
