You have bacteria in your mouth, even if you have a daily oral care routine at home. Plaque is formed when this bacteria mixes with food and proteins in your mouth. If plaque stays on your teeth, it can harden into tartar and cannot be removed in your home routine. This is when it needs to be carefully scraped off to prevent further damage to the enamel or outer layer of your teeth or to the gums. Regular removal can prevent tooth decay, receding gums and gum disease.
